Manchester United have sacked Norwegian coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after a number of “disappointing weeks”. That’s what the team has announced on sunday. Solskjaer’s assistant Michael Carrick has been appointed as his temporary replacement.
Manchester United have been doing poorly in the Premier League for some time now. The top club, currently seventh in the English league, has lost four of its last five games. According to British media, the club management went into emergency after United lost 4-1 to Watford FC last Friday, currently 16th in the Premier League. Goalkeeper David de Gea described the defeat as “shameful” and a “nightmare”.
Solskjaer played for United between 1996 and 2007 and was appointed interim manager in December 2018. After good initial results, Solskjaer was given a permanent appointment in March 2019. His contract was extended until 2024 last summer.
“While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years,” Manchester United said in a statement. “His place in the club’s history will always be secure.”
