The police have arrested a 41-year-old man from the South Holland town of Voorburg on suspicion of making an anti-Semitic mural of football player Steven Berghuis. That reports the police Thursday. The man was arrested Tuesday evening and has since been released. He remains a suspect in this case. Police do not rule out more arrests.
The anti-Semitic mural was made at the end of July in the Rotterdam district of Crooswijk. Berghuis was depicted in a striped camp coat with a Star of David. He also had a large hooked nose, one of the most famous anti-Jewish stereotypes, and a skullcap on his head. The drawing had the words “Jews Always Run Away” written on it.
The Public Prosecution Service reported in August that “a line” had been crossed with the insulting drawing and that there is group insult and incitement to hatred. The mural was probably a reaction to Berghuis’s transfer from Feyenoord to Ajax last summer. As a result, he has received dozens of serious threats.
