Magdyel Ugaz is a renowned national artist who has earned the affection and respect of the Peruvian public for her talent and charisma, qualities embodied in the various film, television and theater projects that she integrates. In interview with The Republic, the actress told details of her participation in the play “La verdad”, directed by her colleague Giovanni Ciccia. She also spoke about what will happen to her character ‘Teresita’ in “At the bottom there is room”his state of health after undergoing an operation for endometriosis, his sentimental situation and how he deals with criticism on social networks.
—Magdyel, how has it been working with Sergio Galliani and Giovanni Ciccia in the play “La verdad”?
-A gift. Whenever I start a project I appreciate it because I learn so much in each scene. Sergio (Galliani) He is an actor whom I love and admire very much. We met again, we had fun and we learned. and of Giovanni (Ciccia)He has a very special eye and I felt accompanied by him as a director, since for me it is something important that he is guiding us.
—Magdyel, what did you feel when you witnessed that there were a large number of attendees at the premiere of the play “The Truth”?
—This has been a theater proposal that I fell in love with from the beginning, also because it meant the reopening of an emblematic theater such as the Marsano.
I felt that there were many signs that told me that this play was the one I had to be in and the attendance of the public has been wonderful, which has been living every moment of the play at its premiere.
It is that this work has everything, comedy, suspense and drama. It’s a special journey with the characters.

—Magdyel, do you prefer television or theater?
I started working at the televisionIt was my great school. However, I feel that the theater It has made me aware of the here and now, of feeling that journey with the characters and of the complicity of the public —which is unique, because today’s performance is not the same as yesterday’s. It is original, special as life itself.
In the theater nothing is said, you always have to browse.
—Do Magdyel Ugaz and ‘Teresita’ from “AFHS” share any similarities?
—I always try, every time a character comes to me, to think about the things that bring us closer. It is similar to when you meet someone. There are some with whom I have more things in common than with others. With ‘Teresita’ I feel that the game unites me a lot. She is very daring and I, despite being fearful, take risks.
I like her that she is a girl who dreams a lot. I feel that at one point in my life I stopped dreaming. Pessimism also took hold of me and now I no longer give wings to those things.
It has been important that this character returned to my life, because ‘Teresita’ had already left the series. This has been a new moment. There’s a new cast, actors and stories, and here I am walking through it, enjoying it.
—What does Magdyel Ugaz mean when she mentions that she stopped dreaming?
—I believe that like everyone in the journey of life we have ups and downs. Moments in which we are eager to want and achieve projects on a personal level, but I feel that at one point I got lost looking for my career to advance professionally. I put aside what I wanted for myself as Magdyel.
I feel that when I left the series I began to give myself time and space to do what I was looking for on a personal level. Now that I’m back with this character and with these new questions, once again I really want to continue studying —last year I went to Spain.
This year that the series ends, well, it depends, I think we’re going to continue; but in the time we have free I want to travel again, to continue taking workshops not only on acting, but also on ontological coaching, on things that cultivate my soul and my heart. That excites me now.
—Peter’s participation in “AFHS” would have come to an end after his sudden death. Will the same thing happen with ‘Teresita’ or will it continue in the series?
—In “Al fondo hay sitio” anything can happen, you never know. Today we say that Peter died, but that may not be so. This series is life itself, it surprises us all the time.
When we imagine something one way, suddenly “AFHS” turns us around and shows us another way.
—Magdyel, a new suitor appeared for ‘Teresita’ in “AFHS”. Will your character give himself a new opportunity in love?
—(Laughs). Yes, there is someone who has set their eyes on ‘Tere’, but she is in others right now. I feel that it is nice to be in love. I love that the characters fall in love, but it also seems valid to me that it is not the only thing that happens to us. In real life they also ask you if you are with a boyfriend or not, but it is also good to be alone. In my case, it’s not that I cling to solitude, but I think having space for one is important. I feel that sometimes we have idealized love, that if they don’t see you with a partner they think you are unhappy and vice versa.
—So, is Magdyel Ugaz enjoying her bachelorhood?
—I am learning from myself, working on continuing to accept things that I did not like to look at and giving them recognition and not waiting for validation from others.
I’m trying not to get caught up in the routine because I feel like at some point I entered an autopilot, a robot mode, where you do things and don’t enjoy. What I am doing now is living and not surviving.
—As a result of your participation in the world of TV, how do you deal with criticism on social networks?
—Whenever I’m in therapy I talk about how permeable I am and that at one point that scares me, but I feel that it helps me and connects me. Yes, I am a person who definitely hurts when there are harsh and strong comments; however, I try not to give it the weight and power that I previously placed on it.
There are many people who hug you in the street, they thank you, they tell you: “You accompany me every night”, “I don’t feel alone with you”, “You make my life happy”; and, suddenly, a hater appears who texts you “shut up” or “you’re boring.”
At that moment, I decide not to give more prominence to a single comment when there are 20 or 30 that say nice things to me, because staying with the dark part, which is also valid, makes you alert.
—After you underwent an operation after endometriosis, how is your health?
—Women write to me —and couples of women— asking me why they are worried. It seems important to me to talk about endometriosis. I live with this disease, but not in the same way that I suffered a few months ago in which I had pain, bleeding, a swollen stomach, a bad mood. I have learned to live with this disease from the diet, from finding good advice with a good specialist, because before it was very difficult, suffering.
