Atzili, Lavi and Haziza observe the fast foreseen by the Jewish holiday which ends an hour and a half before the match. Coach Bakhar: “Whoever takes the field will be ready”
It is called Yom Kippur. It is one of the four main holidays in the Jewish calendar and involves fasting from drinking and eating from sunset on the eve to dusk on the same day. It falls today, 5 October, and can have a significant impact on the Champions League evening match between Juventus and Maccabi Haifa, since some members of the visiting team are watching it. Starting with the coach, Barak Bakhar, who spoke about it yesterday in the usual press conference on the eve: “I will do it and also some players, but it is not excluded that those who fast will want to play anyway”, explained the coach.
FAST
–
The entire trip of the Israeli club was organized on the basis of the day of fasting, which is dedicated to prayer and also abstains individuals from work. So much so that the group arrived in Turin on Monday evening, in order to carry out all the activities on the eve within the first part of the day, and the Youth League match between Primavera teams was brought forward by one day to avoid playing it today. Within the Turin retreat of the team, out of respect for those who observe Yom Kippur (the players and the coach are joined by many other club collaborators), there should not even be technical meetings, or in any case collective activities of a “professional” nature, until at sunset. “This is an important anniversary for Judaism that will end an hour and a half before the match begins, maybe someone will be able to feed themselves sufficiently – explained Bakhar -. In any case, whoever takes the field will be ready, we have a large roster and I will be able to rely on foreigners who do not follow the Jewish religion ”.
PLAYERS AT RISK
–
Among the fasting players there is Omer Atzili, top scorer of the group with 7 goals (plus 2 assists), right winger: an Israeli-formed Church with a fair European experience between Champions and Europa League. But also Neta Lavi, the captain and metronome of the team, a midfielder with a good vision of the game and a great personality; and Dolev Haziza, left winger with a mature right foot (he is a class of 1995) but who a few years ago was followed with interest by some observers of European clubs among young prospects. To these is also added Dean David, generally used as an escort but who was super protagonist during the Champions League preliminaries in the various challenges with Olympiacos, Red Star and Apollon Limassol. Three out of four players who are fasting are therefore the pivots of Maccabi Haifa: at risk for the match until the end. At the end of Yom Kippur they will communicate their feelings, in order to understand if and how to use them.
