The Dutch Juniors have again overcome a deficit against Bulgaria. An early goal was brushed off by Ian Maatsen and Joshua Zirkzee (two goals): 3-1. As a result, the promises kept course in a grim qualifying match for the European Championship in Georgia and Romania in 2023.
Goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen touched the ball for the first time in Almere after fifteen minutes of play. Despite the one-sided game image, the U21s were behind a few minutes later. The Brighton keeper played a negative role in this, when he was surprised in the released short corner with a low cross from Sparta Prague attacker Martin Minchev.
Feyenoord player Lutsharel Geertruida (over) and Hertha midfielder Jurgen Ekkelenkamp (post) created the first serious danger after the Orange resumes. When Jeremie Frimpong launched herself moments later, it was still a hit. Not yet when PEC striker Daishawn Redan extended the pass of Bayer Leverkusen’s back on the post, but when Maatsen was there like chickens to ram in the 1-1.
Both backs were left halfway in the dressing room. One of the replacements, Micky van de Ven, was immediately worth gold as a left back. His low pass, which seemed to have been shot from behind the back line, was released by goalkeeper Damyan Hristov, after which Joshua Zirkzee gave the Juniors the lead in the first minute of the second half.
He was no longer in danger. In the final minutes, Zirkzee, who also helped the Dutch Juniors to a point after trailing 2-0 in Switzerland, literally lifted the final score to 3-1 with a nice panenka, where substitute Brian Brobbey had already had the necessary opportunities in vain. Zirkzee’s fifth goal in four matches was preceded by a foul on outstanding Ekkelenkamp.
The Dutch Juniors, which took office without Sven Botman, Mitchel Bakker (injured), Devyne Rensch (transferred) and Myron Boadu (passed), have as many loss points as Switzerland. The talents will compete in and against Gibraltar on Monday.
