Deputy Captain Augusto participated in PoderDataCast; states that there was no institutional violence during the military dictatorship in Brazil
The pre-candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT), if elected in 2022, will scrap the Armed Forces and order the removal of the military from the positions they currently occupy in the government, he told Power 360 the deputy Captain Augustoleader of Bancada da Bala and vice-president of PL (Liberal Party).
“He [Lula] will retaliate against the Armed Forces for this period that the president Bolsonaro been in power. More than that, I also believe that he should turn the cannons to the military police and military firefighters for the simple fact that they are also military. […] Retaliation is taken for granted.”he said.
Despite the comments, the deputy says he thinks “almost impossible for Lula to be elected”. According to him, the 2nd round “certainly” will be between PT and Jair Bolsonaro. The statements were made in an interview with the PowerDataCast.

The survey was carried out by PowerDategroup company Power360 Journalism, with its own resources. Data were collected from April 24 to 26, 2022, through calls to cell phones and landlines. There were 3,000 interviews in 283 municipalities in the 27 units of the Federation. The margin of error is 2 percentage points. The confidence interval is 95%. The TSE registration is BR-07167/2022.
When commenting on the participation of the military in politics, Captain Augusto criticized the part of the new Electoral Code that provides for a 4-year quarantine for the military to contest the elections. According to him, it is “an aberration, an absurdity”. And complete: “We will try to overthrow it in the next term”.
DICTATORSHIP IN BRAZIL
Captain Augusto believes that there was no institutional violence during the military dictatorship (1964-1985). He claims that the cases “isolated” occurred without the institutional guidance of the State.
“There was no violence whatsoever, nothing, and then the military voluntarily gave power back to civilians. Of course, in the middle of 20 years, there are occasional episodes that ended up happening. But there is no way to say that they were acts endorsed by the military government,” he said.
The deputy made the statements while commenting on the audio recorded by the STM (Superior Military Court) with alleged evidence of acts of torture practiced by the military during the military regime. The recordings were initially released by journalist Miriam Leitão. THE Power 360 also released the content (read here).
“[…] Argentina’s dictatorship, in 8 years, killed more than 5,000 people. In Brazil, in 20 years, there were less than 300 political disappeared,” he said.
The data presented by the deputy differs from those confirmed by commissions that investigated violence in these periods.
According to the final report of National Truth Commission434 were killed and disappeared from 1964 to 1985. The document states that the recorded and proven violations resulted in “of the generalized and systematic action of the Brazilian State” and that the repression was “conceived and implemented based on decisions issued by the Presidency of the Republic and the military ministries”.
In the Argentine dictatorship, the local government announced in 2016 that at least 8,571 people were murdered or disappeared by the action of state agents during the regime that lasted from 1976 to 1983. Several organizations, such as Avós das Praças de Maio, disagree with the number and claim that at least 30,000 people disappeared in the period.
GENERAL SANTOS CRUZ
The Bolsonar deputy said that former minister Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz (Podemos) had “ungrateful posture”, but says he is not opposed to a possible candidacy of the military to the Presidency of the Republic. The possibility is raised by members of his party.
“We, the military, do not agree with ingratitude. He was in the government, he left the government, he has every right to run as a candidate, no problem, now what I can’t agree with is that he has this ungrateful attitude,” he said.
Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz was Minister of Bolsonaro’s Government Secretariat for 6 months. After leaving the team, he has been critical of federal management.
