Former Uruguayan president questioned the creation of a common currency between Brazil and Argentina and spoke about Mercosur
The president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva met this Wednesday (25.jan.2023) with former president of Uruguay José Mujica, 87 years old. They dealt with the recent conversations that the PT member had about changes in Mercosur and the creation of a common currency for financial flows between Brazil and Argentina.
Lula did not speak to journalists. At the end of the meeting, Mujica defended the integration of Latin America and the strengthening of Mercosur.
He said that international organizations should not be ideologically dominated by the right, left or center. “Because if not, what we live is a roulette wheel”said.
He also stated that Lula is correct in defending that Mercosur close the agreement with the European Union before advancing in a possible negotiation of the bloc with China.
“For 20 years, we have been negotiating with Europe. Everything is approved, theoretically, but in practice it does not work. Geopolitically, Lula is correct. We have to have one leg on one side, one on the other. Because depending on one is very dangerous. It’s good to diversify, not put all your eggs in one basket.”said.
The meeting was held at the home of Pepe, as Mujica is known. The place is in Rincón del Cerro, in the rural area of Montevideo, capital of Uruguay. As his house is small, the conversation took place under a tent set up outside the residence. Everyone sat on plastic chairs.
The guests were served medialunas, a kind of croissant, but prepared with a different dough, and jesuítas, a pastry made from puff pastry of Portuguese origin.
The meeting lasted about 2 hours. Lula returns this Wednesday night to Brazil. On Sunday (January 22, 2023), he arrived in Argentina, where, in the following days, he had a bilateral meeting with President Alberto Fernández and participated in the 7th summit of CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States).
This Wednesday, Lula traveled to Montevideo. She met with President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou and received the Más Verde medal from the City of Montevideo for her work in favor of the climate. In the middle of the afternoon, she went to Mujica’s house.
