Simiso Buthelezi
A recent case of a dead boxer was after a competition at the Greyville Convention Center in Durban, South Africa, in which they participated Simiso Buthelezi and Siphesihle Mntungwa in the lightweight category.
Surprisingly, Buthelezi had the advantage in the fight and it seemed that he was going to be the winner, since he cornered his rival against the ropes. However, when he walked away he seemed off-kilter and suddenly started throwing punches into the air, as if he couldn’t see where his opponent was.
At that point, the referee considered that the fighter had suffered a serious brain injury and could not continue in the ring, so he called a technical ‘knockout’ and declared Mntungwa the winner.
According to a press release from the African Boxing Federation, the athlete was immediately transferred to a health center and, at first, the doctors stated that he was going to recover.
