Chihuahua—The year is shaping up to reach record figures in the export of live cattle to the United States, with 800,000 heads of cattle projected to pass through the state’s quarantine stations, indicating an annual growth of between 5 and 6%, reported the president of the Chihuahua Regional Livestock Union (UGRCH), Álvaro Bustillos Fuentes.
He said that this is 50,000 additional heads of cattle to those exported in 2023, a growth driven by the drought that has forced producers to sell their animals and by the good prices registered in the US market, with the pound trading at between 3.20 and 3.25 dollars.
“This is very good for the Livestock Union because it is where the resources that allow for construction and works on fixed assets are derived to provide better services to livestock farmers,” he said.
He added that work is being done to provide added value to producers in relation to genetics and certifications, which results in additional prices in the marketing of livestock.
Bustillos Fuentes indicated that the risk that the state had last year of losing its health status, which allows producers to export livestock, has been removed, and now there is the opportunity to strengthen Chihuahua, be at the forefront and be a leader in health issues.
He noted that with the recent visit of representatives of the National Service for Health, Safety and Agri-Food Quality (SENASICA), there was confidence in safeguarding the health of the state.
The representative of the livestock producers stated that they will seek to open communication channels with the next federal administration, mainly with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), for the good of the producers of Chihuahua, since in the current administration the agricultural sector was one of the most affected.
Regarding the rains that have been recorded in recent weeks, he pointed out that they have not been widespread in the state and “in general the land is so thirsty that any rain that falls is not noticed, we need more widespread rains,” he said.
In 2023, 742,000 heads of cattle crossed the state’s quarantine stations, of which around 500,000 were from ranchers in Chihuahua and the rest from producers in Durango, Tamaulipas, and other states.
