In The Hague it is the day of Israel's response, after the accusations of genocide presented yesterday by South Africa. South Africa has taken the Jewish state to the International Court of Justice for violating the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Pretoria calls on the Court to urgently adopt precautionary measures and order an end to the offensive in the Strip where , in the past three months, more than 1 percent of the population has been killed in Israeli bombing and 1.9 million people (nearly 85 percent of the population) are displaced. Israel was accused yesterday of having adopted, in the Gaza Strip, “systematic conduct that indicates genocidal intent”. The Israeli Foreign Ministry condemned the South African initiative, calling the country “the legal arm of Hamas”.
