After years of silence following its official announcement, Amazon has confirmed that the Yakuza series, now known as Like a Dragon: Yakuzaalready has a release date, and It will be available on your streaming service starting next October.
Through a conference, it has been revealed that Like a Dragon: Yakuza It will be a series made up of six episodes. The first three will be available on Prime Video on October 24, 2024while the other three will arrive on the streaming platform on November 1 of this year.

Masaharu Take, best known for The Naked Director, will be in charge of directing this project, while Ryoma Takeuchifamous for appearing in multiple Kamen Rider films and having a small participation in Detective Pikachu, has the responsibility of playing Kiryu Kazuma, the protagonist. This is what Takeuchi commented about bringing the famous yakuza to life:
“You can’t play Kiryu Kazuma without getting in shape, so I knew I had to do it. This was a job not only for me, but also for the costume and makeup teams. It took me two and a half hours to prepare for this shoot.
It’s part Kiryu Kazuma and part me. I got so close to the part that it was difficult to tell where he ended and I began. That included getting in shape for the role, the suit, etc. Instead of acting like Kiryu, I feel like he became part of the family.”
For its part, Take mentioned the following about Amazon’s new production:
“Having someone with as much of a physical presence as Takeuchi makes a difference. I understood that he knows his body better than anyone, so I left it to him to get in shape. Takeuchi also did all the action himself, it was awesome
In 1995, the protagonist is still young and makes many mistakes, which lead to him spending a decade in prison and the consequences he faces when he gets out in 2005. I tried to show those differences in the two time periods, and the cast helped achieve this too”.
Through an official statement, Masayoshi Yokoyama, director of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and executive producer of the new seriesmentioned the following:
“While the games allow you to experience their world through a subjective lens, this adaptation will ultimately be the objective way to enjoy this show. I have no doubt that fans of the series will be drawn to how they bring the games to life and add new surprises. “I’m sure newcomers will be drawn into just the gritty realism of the show.”
Like a Dragon: Yakuza It will not be a direct adaptation of the events of the first game, but will be inspired by the events of this title. The story takes place in two different periods, 1995 and 2005, very important years for Kiryu’s life. The interesting thing is that the description mentions that here we will see Kiryu and three of his childhood friends. In the games’ canon, Nishikiyama and Yumi take these roles, so the third member will likely be someone completely new.

I can’t wait to see the series. Yakuza is one of my video game franchises, and after seeing what was done with falloutI have high expectations for this new adaptation, even if it doesn’t give us a completely faithful adaptation of the first game.
