Genoa investigation: no no-confidence vote for Toti
Guarantee and full trust in Giovanni Toti and, consequently, in Alessandro Piana, who immediately made himself available to take the reins of the Liguria Region, after the arrest of the governor. This is the spirit with which the majority of the regional council rejected, voting against, motion 109, proposed by the Democratic Party, M5S, Linea Condivisa and Lista Sansa to disqualify Toti. Eighteen votes against versus 11 in favour. “No one must stop the renaissance of this land” reiterated the center-right groups that support the majority.
Motion of no confidence in Toti, the governor’s letter to the opposition: “You will continue to lose the elections too”
“With a political short-sightedness with rare precedents, today, with this motion of no confidence, the opposition is attempting a political push that will not only fail in numbers, but it confirms, if ever there was any need, all of theirs inadequacy to lead this region”. Thus begins the letter from the president of the Liguria Region, Giovanni Toti, read in the hall of the Regional Council by councilor Alessandro Bozzano, amid an initial mix of whistles and applause. “After a decade of constant political and electoral defeats – writes Toti again – the same ruling class of the left, which was able to disappoint the citizens more than any other, in a Region where its traditions were very strong, today glimpses, thanks to a judicial investigation, the possibility of recovering some of the lost ground.
It does so by exploiting the echo of an investigation which at the moment is only that, without indictments and much less without convictions. In fact, we won’t say a word about this, not even what I could say, imitating the opposition, about the long shadows that concern the Democratic Party. A motion presented in a hurry, so that everything doesn’t collapse.” According to the governor, “here lies the first symptom of political weakness. Because there is nothing political in your motion, in fact, there is the opposite. There is a policy that, instead of defending its own prerogatives, autonomous and parallel to those of the other powers of the State, becomes a megaphone or spare wheel, in the hope of collecting some crumbs. What a disappointment for the heirs of a tradition that had made the centrality of politics its guiding star, find ourselves today stammering and repeating what we read in the newspapers about an investigation yet to be verified. We would have expected, on your part too, a proud desire to carry forward a popular mandate, which you too have received in order to sit here – underlines Toti in the letter -. Unfortunately, the desire to discredit your role and that of the Council of which you are part has prevailed, having been called by you to a preliminary debate which anticipates the same preliminary findings. You have decided to continue on the path of a politics with a small, subaltern ‘p’, in order to take advantage of this presumed moment of weakness, trying to achieve an objective that you do not consider achievable with your abilities and your credibility”.
In the document the president reassures the opposition: “Don’t worry, even today, as we have been doing for nine years now, we are here to remedy your inability, now more evident than ever, to discuss issues and projects, not prejudices. And even today – continues Toti – we will show you that we are able to assume, before the voters, the responsibilities that you have not been able to assume, and we will assume our responsibilities thanks to the commitment of this majority, of the council and in particular of the interim president Alessandro Piana, to whom I express my great gratitude for how he is carrying forward with great commitment the great work started together many years ago”. “Your Liguria – continues the governor in the letter, addressing the oppositions – was a geographical entity, not an administrative reality. Your Liguria was a land in the shadows, happy to take a step back, in the hope that by disappearing from the political map the mediocrity of its ruling class would also disappear. Your Liguria was a Region in which ambition was a fault, merit something to hide, to avoid unpleasant comparisons, flatness a virtue, private enterprise not a resource, but a symbol of selfishness, oh God, maybe not just all of them. A Liguria where ‘wanting to do’ was a sin, the inconclusive debate in the section a substitute for the duty to choose. Today Liguria is something else and we claim it with greater pride than ever. Today Liguria is a model of ability to choose, of attracting investments, of speed of implementation“. “We asked ourselves the reason for your hatred towards every infrastructure that we are building, towards every project that is being built – continues Toti in the letter read by the majority councilor -. Even those that you would have wanted in other times. We wondered why your fervent cheering for every stumble, for every byzantinism that can slow down something that you know is needed, for every complaint, committee, for every no of any kind. Even those same works that elsewhere, in Rome, you have approved, here you are unable to make them yours.”
“Today – writes Toti – with your disheveled and confused motion, which puts everything together, even this hatred is better understood: you don’t hate works and projects as such, you hate them as a unit of measurement of your inability, past and present. You hate what reminds, and above all reminds voters, of your mediocrity and inconclusiveness. Hate what testifies to your inability to choose and act. That is, you hate everything that recalls your inability, that distinguishes your unpreparedness for the Government from those who know how to take on this responsibility. You want to destroy the “Liguria model” that has been built in recent years, with the proud reaction to the collapse of Morandi. In fact, you want something else to destroy it for you, while you cheer from the stands, without even having the courage to take the field. I tell you now and for the future, there are no stamped papers of a Court that can replace your ignorance and your opportunism. Dear friends of the opposition, today not only will you lose in the vote for this motion, but even before that you have lost the sense of your role and, believing you were underlining one of our weaknesses, you did not realize that you had instead shown all of yours. For this reason – he concludes – beyond the motion, you will continue to lose the elections”.
