In the next few days, the Libyan city of Misrata, west of the country, will host an expanded meeting that includes members of the Libyan House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State, to agree on election laws and the outcomes of the “6+6” committee to hold presidential and legislative elections as soon as possible, and to activate the outcomes of the Bouznika Moroccan meetings by appointing holders of sovereign positions. This is according to what a Libyan parliamentary source confirmed to Al-Ittihad.
The source indicated that the UN mission to Libya is keen to participate in the upcoming meeting between the two councils to bring closer views on controversial issues, especially the election laws issued by the “6+6” committee several months ago and rejected by some Libyan political and military forces.
At the same time, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Stephanie Khoury, discussed with the Libyan National Security Advisor, Ibrahim Bouchnaf, the necessity of working to build confidence between all Libyan political parties and reviving the political process in the country. During the coming period, according to what the United Nations Mission to Libya announced in a brief statement. The UN mission to Libya confirmed that the two sides reviewed the challenges facing the unification of security institutions in Libya in light of the continuing political divisions and the growing risks resulting from the security conditions in the region.
In addition, yesterday, the French Ambassador to Libya, Mustafa Maharaj, discussed with the Libyan National Security Advisor, Ibrahim Bouchnaf, in the city of Benghazi, east of the country, developments in the political process and the security situation in Libya and the country’s southern neighboring countries, according to what was announced by the French Embassy in Tripoli.
The French Embassy confirmed that the two sides agreed on the importance of Libya regaining its stability and relaunching the political process.
A number of ambassadors of foreign countries to Libya are conducting intensive consultations with the political and military actors active in the Libyan scene, as part of supporting the efforts of the UN mission to push towards holding presidential and legislative elections in the country as soon as possible.
In another context, the representative of the Libyan Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi, yesterday, discussed with the Deputy Special Envoy of the Secretary-General, the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs, Georgette Gagnon, ways of continuing the UN mission’s support for the efforts of the Presidential Council, in the path of reconciliation and achieving transitional justice in Libya. .
The Libyan efforts aimed at activating the national reconciliation conference faltered last April as a result of not activating what was agreed upon by some members of the preparatory committee to organize the inclusive conference, which prompted a large number of tribes to withdraw from the conference’s preparatory committee, as a result of not activating the promises they had received, that is, the withdrawing tribes.
In the same context, yesterday, member of the Libyan Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi, discussed with representatives of the Libyan Notables and Sheikhs Authority (Bani Walid City Branch) the importance of the sheikhs and notables’ participation in the national reconciliation project. Al-Lafi called on the Commission to support the efforts of the Libyan Presidential Council in making this file a success and promoting social peace, noting the importance of the project and the contribution of Libyan experts and academics in its preparation, according to a statement issued by the Presidential Council. For their part, the notables and sheikhs praised Al-Lafi’s efforts in the national reconciliation project, stressing their support for the Libyan Presidential Council in restoring confidence between all political parties through this national project.
In Tripoli, the High National Elections Commission set June 9 as the date to begin implementing elections for municipal councils whose legal mandate has expired and which were replaced by administrative councils. In a statement, the Commission asked the public administration to develop approved plans for each stage of implementation, and to take the necessary measures regarding the equipment, staffing, and financial coverage of electoral administration offices, each according to the size of the electoral process assigned to it. According to the lists published by the Commission, the number of municipalities targeted by the decision is 101, including 60 in the western region, 12 in the eastern region, and 29 in the southern region.
Last Monday, the Commission held a meeting with operations coordinators, in preparation for opening the voter register for the municipal council elections. During the meeting, attendees discussed the readiness of the technical departments to soon announce the opening of the voter register for the municipal elections.
