Lewis Hamilton is not afraid of being knocked off the track by rival Max Verstappen in the decisive grand prix of the season in Abu Dhabi. The Mercedes driver has to score more points in the last race of the season than the Dutchman from Red Bull.
“I’m not afraid of what might not happen,” said the seven-time world champion of a possible intentional or unintentional crash. “I don’t give space to those kinds of thoughts. I also don’t have a history of accidents.”
Hamilton and Verstappen have the same number of points (369.5). In the highly unlikely event that both rivals fail to score points in the final race, 24-year-old Verstappen grabs the world title as he has won more this season. Verstappen won nine races, Hamilton eight.
Hamilton thinks his victory in this year’s GP of Brazil may be more valuable than an eventual eighth world title. “When it comes to racing, Brazil was the most beautiful,” the Mercedes driver calls his best moment of 2021. When asked, he says that he does not think an eighth world title can top that.
In the race in Brazil, the Briton fought back from tenth starting position after a grid penalty for an engine change. In the exciting final phase he was still able to pass his title rival Verstappen and grab the victory.
