On October 19, 2011, a young Robert Lewandowski inaugurated his scoring record in the Champions League, in the defeat of his Borussia Dortmund against Olympiacos in Athens (3-1). Thirteen years later, from a penalty against Brest, the now Barça striker scored his 100th goal in the top European club competition.
The Pole was overwhelmed by goalkeeper Bizot and with his usual style, slowing down before shooting, he deceived the goalkeeper from the eleven meters with a shot placed to his right. It wasn’t just another penalty goal, the 17th in his Champions League career from the fatal spot, and that’s why he celebrated it with more enthusiasm than usual.
The veteran striker, 36 years old, has reached this figure in 67 games between Borussia Dortmund (17 goals), Bayern Munich (69) and finally the Blaugrana (14). Only three defeats in the Champions League have Lewandowski’s teams suffered in the Champions League whenever the Pole has scored: in the scoring debut against Olympiacos, against Manchester City (3-2) in 2014 and against Real Madrid (4- 2) in the quarterfinals of 2017. He also tied five games and the other 59 duels where he scored ended in victory.
Lewandowski is the third all-time top scorer in the Champions League, only surpassed by Cristiano Ronaldo (140) and Lionel Messi (129). Behind them are Benzema (90), Raúl González (71), Van Nistelrooy (56), Thomas Müller (54), Thierry Henry (50), Kylian Mbappé (49) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (48).
Lewandowski’s 100th goal in the Champions League also comes during the Warsaw native’s best season at Barça. The center forward already has 21 goals at this point in the season, compared to 26 in total from the previous campaign. In the League he is the top scorer with 15 goals, while in the European competition he already has 6 goals in five games.
