Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati ordered this Thursday to present an “urgent” complaint against Israel before the UN Security Council, after the death toll from a drone bombing on Wednesday night in the south of the country increased to seven, all of them from the same family.
“Given the excess of this Israeli aggression, the fall of martyrs and the great destruction it causes, I have held consultations on the matter with the Foreign Minister, Abdullah Bou Habib, and I asked you to present a new urgent complaint against Israel to the Security Council,” Mikati announced in a statement.
The leader confirmed that seven people from the same family died due to a drone attack carried out late on Wednesday against a residential building in the city of Nabatieh, far from the border areas where crossfire with the Jewish State is usually concentrated.
According to the National News Agency (ANN), the bombing also injured six other people, including a child who could be rescued alive from the rubble about four hours after the event.
This is the worst attack against civilians since the outbreak of fighting more than four months ago and it occurred after another bombing also killed a woman and her two minor children on Wednesday in another southern town, bringing the death toll to eleven in a single day.
Furthermore, the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah lost at least three members during that intense day of attacks, as announced by the armed movement itself.
Faced with this “escalation”, The prime minister asked to convene an “urgent” meeting of the National Emergency Authority to follow up on the situation and called on the international community to stop Israel, according to the note.
The Jewish State announced on Wednesday “a series of extensive attacks in Lebanon”, in response to the launch of a barrage of rockets that caused the death of a soldier.
No group claimed responsibility until the launch of those rockets.
Hezbollah and Israeli forces have been locked in intense crossfire since October 8, in the worst border clashes since the war they fought in 2006.
This Thursday, Israel again attacked Hezbollah's military infrastructure in southern Lebanon after intense bombing the day before.
“Fighter aircraft recently attacked dozens of Hezbollah terrorist targets in the Wadi Saluki area, including launch sites, military structures and terrorist infrastructure,” the Israeli military said.
Hours earlier, Israeli aircraft also attacked Shiite militia positions in the Labbouneh area; as well as in Taybeh during the night.
In Israel, 19 people have died on the northern border (13 soldiers and 6 civilians); while in Lebanon some 259 people have died, including some 29 members of Palestinian militias, one soldier and 30 civilians – among them nine minors and three journalists – in addition to Hezbollah militiamen.
