No duties on designer electric cars Leapmotor. The Chinese joint venture of which Stellantis is part has in fact announced that it has started production of the T03 in Poland, to be precise in the factory in Tychy: The first units of the company’s small electric vehicle left assembly lines last week, Jefferies analysts said, citing Leapmotor management directly.
Leapmotor T03, production in Europe
For the mass production we will have to wait for the summer to pass, we are talking about September, but in the meantime the joint venture led by Stellantis has managed to avoid the extra tariffs imposed by the EU Commission since, despite being the Chinese company, it is not about electric cars Made in China but Made in Europe. For the record, it must be said that Stellantis had already chosen its Polish plant in March as the first production base in Europe for Leapmotor cars, for cost saving reasons.
New models in Tychy
Leapmotor’s strategy seems to be to root almost all of its production in Europe. In fact, the same analysts have reported that the joint venture plans to assemble a second model in the same Polish plant in Tychy: we are talking about the A12 SUV, which should enter production starting from the first quarter of next year. And that’s not all, because Leapmotor has also started preparing the localized production of components.
Duties effect
Clearly not all of Leapmotor’s activities for Europe will be based in Europe. For example, the company plans to produce its C10 SUV in China and export it in the Old Continent in the initial phase, since this model could be sold at higher prices. In this circumstance, the duties will hit the joint venture: in the case of Leapmotor they will amount to one further 21%.
