League Ville Peltonen hone the details of HIFK – he finds such differences in the Finnish and Swiss leagues

Helsinki IFK head coach Ville Peltonen emphasizes that the Ice Hockey League is approaching the point where everything needs to be taken away from the body.

“You have to dare to practice a little differently, but you also have to think about where the training load will be reduced,” Peltonen describes in the interview with STT.

During the exceptional period, matches have been postponed or canceled at short notice. Arrears pile up a game load on the tail of the regular season.

“Exercises are shortened and sharpened. The number of games is one of the factors. Those who get more playing time than others may practice less,” Peltonen points out.

Training is also affected by diseases and injuries, among other things. At this point, however, HIFK already exists as a basic template for gaming, but it is being honed towards the playoffs.

“The processes for special situations, starts, etc. have been going on throughout the season,” says Peltonen.

Peltonen During his playing career, he had time to experience the main series in Switzerland, where before returning to HIFK he also coached in Bern and coached in Lausanne. The fence provided an opportunity for comparison.

“There are fewer differences between teams in the league. If all players are ranked, the level of player material will be the same,” says Peltonen.

“In Switzerland, there are bigger differences in the way games are played between teams. There you have to prepare for different things from one game to another, which is interesting and challenging.”

In the Alpine country, there are enough star players for each team that meet the criteria for an international top player.

“Perhaps for financial reasons, many players will not leave KHL. Many top players are in Switzerland precisely because the level of player material there is hard, ”Peltonen ponders.

“Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. Of course, we always want to know the reason. The reasons for the result are clarified every time,” Peltonen emphasizes.

There are more young players in the league today than when Peltonen started in the early 1990s.

“We compete for where we do best. During the seasons, we can take steps within the team and the players move on. Then they move to North America, for example, and that’s a kind of goal for League clubs,” Peltonen thinks.

For those aiming at professional fields, Peltonen repeats the old tried and tested guidelines.

“The basic pillars must be in order. Doing sports, high-quality work and playing all sports from an early age develops the playing eye.”

According to Peltonen, it would be valuable if mental skills, presence and determination were more deeply involved in the development of the individual.

“Young people advancing to the top even have an imagination of why they practice in a certain way, and the quality of the training often improves.”

Even after his playing career, Peltonen’s spark in hockey rumbles brightly.

“Coaching is helping and teaching, and together we make a profit. That’s where I find my passion,” Peltonen reveals.
