Barcelona president Joan Laporta said coach Xavi Hernandez will decide whether or not French striker Ousmane Dembele will participate in the second half of the season after refusing to renew his contract with the team.
Barcelona had asked Dembele to renew his contract or leave during the winter transfer period, which came to an end at midnight on Monday, but the French striker did not make any decision, stressing that he would not be subject to “blackmail” by the club.
Laporta revealed that Dembele rejected an offer to join one of the English clubs on Monday on the last day of the transfers, noting that Barcelona believes that the player has already decided his next destination when his contract with the Catalan team expires on June 30.
When asked whether Dembele would participate in Barcelona in his remaining matches this season, Laporta answered on the sidelines of presenting his new winger Adama Traore, who is back on loan from Wolverhampton, England: “This is up to the coach, but what I think is that the coach plays for The current and next season, and therefore it will be difficult for any player who has not renewed his contract to play, especially since he will leave the club at the end of the season.”
Barcelona sporting director, Jordi Cruyff, went in the same direction when he said: “The club has signed players who can score goals. Xavi has more options in this position than in December.”
