FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Any change in the European Central Bank’s monetary policy will be gradual, ECB President Christine Lagarde said on Monday, as markets expect rate hikes this year.
In remarks almost identical to those made a week ago, Lagarde said risks to inflation were up, but that the ECB sought to maintain flexibility and that decisions in March would depend on data.
“Any adjustment to our monetary policy will be gradual,” Lagarde told a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. “We need more than ever to maintain flexibility and optionality in the conduct of monetary policy.”
