The final stage of the Tour of Sicily witnessed an impressive competitive performance from Alessandro Covey, as he crowned the UAE Cycling Team’s performance in the Tour by taking third place in the race, as well as advancing to third place in the general classification of the Tour. The race was held over a 180 km track from Santa Fe Agata de Miletto to Mascali, a final 9.7 km climb at Chara de Scorchavaca with a 6.4% incline, David de la Cruz put in a solid performance that enabled him to support his teammates, including Alessandro Covey, to reduce the distance between them and Vincenzo’s group Nibali (Team Trek-Segafredo), who finally took first place after launching in a solo attacking performance, beat Kofi who finished in third.
Nibali also won the Tour general classification title, while Kofi finished third in the general classification, as well as winning first place in the youth riders classification, capping the successes of Team Emirates in the Tour of Sicily, including a two-stage first and Sebastian’s victory. Molano in the lead shirt earlier in the week.
Commenting on the result, Alessandro Covey said: “I am delighted to be third in the general classification and to be on the podium alongside two great cycling champions. I was hoping to win first, and I came close to it in this race, but we are all satisfied with our performance, especially thanks to my colleague Mulano’s victory in two stages of the Tour. I am now looking forward to achieving similar results in the last races of the season.”
