After a career spanning more than twenty years, Kasia Smutniak says goodbye to cinema: “I don’t want to be an actress anymore and I think it’s the most punk decision I’ve made”, she says in an interview with the newspaper The print.
The former Polish model, now a naturalized Italian, explains that the decision came after her debut as a director, in the documentary film on migration Mur.
“Shooting the documentary Wall on the Polish border, amidst unspeakable atrocities, has changed me forever. I feel the need to mix things up and take risks,” observes Smutniak, 44.
In the interview, the artist confides that she had already considered, in the past, the idea of abandoning cinema. “I had tried before, but every time I blocked myself and got back on the carousel like a hamster. I don’t want to be an actress anymore…”, she says.
“Wall – he underlines – was born from the need to communicate the difficult situation on the Polish-Belarus border but in the end it turned out to be an intimate and unexpected journey”.
“I have been telling stories for more than twenty years. And I have truly believed, each time, that they were worth telling. All of them,” Smutniak continues. “At a certain point, the reality that surrounded me, the people I met, their stories, seemed more interesting to me than the ones I happened to interpret.”
“I asked myself, what am I telling? As if reality had surpassed every fantasy, while my curiosity and passion were increasingly directed towards what surrounded me and became part of my life. I decided to stop and follow a pure instinct”.
Smutniak then says he had a sort of revelation during the filming of the series Domina, in Cinecittà. While he was filming, he received messages on his cell phone from the Polish border: “The photos, the videos, the GPS coordinates of people dying, with their children next to them, in the midst of indescribable atrocities. That period,” he says, “caused a split in me that I will never forget. These are experiences that change you. I keep them to myself. The world around me hasn’t changed. I have changed.”
