Court of Cassation, for the first time a woman towards the presidency: Margherita Cassano
There Fifth Commission of the CSM has unanimously decided to propose the name of Margherita Cassanocurrent deputy president of the Supreme Court, for the seat of first president: a role never held so far by a woman.
There the proposal will now have to be examined by the plenum, in the meeting scheduled for next March 1st, when the current first president of the Court Pietro Curzio will leave office due to having reached the age limit in early March.

The next first Chief Justice, Margaret Cassano, was born in Florence in 1955, but is originally from Basilicata. She is the daughter of a senior magistrate, she has been in the judiciary since 1980, first as an employee of the criminal sector, when from 1981 to ’98 she was the prosecutor in Florence dealing with important investigations into mafia-type associations and international drug trafficking. Since 1998 and for 4 years, moreover, you have been the independent judiciary at the Csm. She returned to her role after the experience at Palazzo dei Marescialli, Cassano she has worked since 2003 in Cassation as a councilor: in addition to the joint sections, she was a member of the first criminal section, where she was the rapporteur of the final sentence for external competition in the mafia association of the former Fi senator Marcello Dell’Utri.
From January 2016 she then presided over the Court of Appeal of Florence where she remained until 15 July 2020, when she was appointed deputy president of the Cassation, the first woman to reach such an important role in the Supreme Court.
