Just a pint of beer or an average glass of wine a day can start to decrease overall brain volume, a new study has found. And the damage gets worse as the number of daily drinks increases.
On average, 50-year-olds who drank a pint of beer or a glass of wine (two units of alcohol) a day for the past month had brains that looked two years older than those who drank just half a beer (one unit), according to the study, published last Friday, 4th, in Nature magazine.

The researchers followed nearly 37,000 European adults and seniors, divided into two groups. The first, of those who reported taking one to two doses. And the second, of people who consume more than four doses a day. After analyzing the brain images of the volunteers, the conclusion is that all (even those who drank little) recorded the decrease in brain volume.
And whoever thinks that a beer or a traditional glass of wine would be harmless, is wrong. Scientists rated this type and amount of drink as the equivalent of two units. A shot of a distillate (like whiskey, for example) was defined as a unit.
For those who reported drinking more than four units a day, the problem is even more serious: the brain has been shown to age more than 10 years. If you have a drink of alcohol every day, don’t despair. The study is not conclusive because it was based on people of a certain age group and a specific region.
It is also worth remembering that scientists focused on reports of alcohol consumption made only over the course of a year. Previous consumption was not considered, which could significantly modify the results. Either way, the research provides a clue for future studies on the impact of alcohol consumption on the brain over time.
