John Paul Montoya could not be world champion Formula 1, but he did have an outstanding stint in the category, in which he won seven races between 2001 and 2003, with the Williams and McLaren teams.
The Colombian appeared in F1 in one of the most dominant moments of ferrari that swept those years in the category with the German Michael Schumacher as the main driver.
Today, Ferrari lives low hours. They haven’t won the championship since 2007, when Finn Kimi Raikkonen did it, and they haven’t won a constructors’ title since 2008, when Raikkonen and Brazilian Felipe Massa were there.
This year, Ferrari had a good start, but in the last few races it lost ground and today the RedBulls, especially the Dutchman Jos Verstappen, dominate F1.
In an interview with Vegas Insider, Montoya harshly criticized Ferrari’s strategies this season.
“I think Ferrari started with their own package, and they should be leading the points by now by a long way. And I think to this day they still have the pace to win races, but you know, they keep beating themselves up. , declared the Bogotan, who today runs in the IMSA category.
“It’s like they’re so scared to make decisions, in my opinion. That’s what’s really hurting them. It’s not that they’re not doing an amazing job, because they’ve built the best car this year. But they’re in that position you know. when you’re so good you’re like, ‘Let’s not screw it up.’ When you’re thinking that, someone else is thinking, ‘We got you.’ You’re completely screwed,” Montoya added.
Montoya likes the risk RedBull takes
Just as he was when he raced in Formula 1, Montoya recognized that the team red bull they like to take risks and that is why they are still at the top of the championship.
“Red Bull is pretty amazing. I think what Red Bull has, is that they’re not afraid of losing. They have this attitude: it doesn’t matter if we mess up, we try. Whereas the mentality at Ferrari is: let’s not screw it up, because we can win,” he added.
Formula 1 resumes its championship this weekend, with the Belgian Grand Prix, after a four-week break for the European summer.
