No candidate for the presidency of RTVE has obtained, in the Congress of Deputiesthe two-thirds majority necessary to be elected in the first vote. Just as it happened in the election of the eleven members of the Board of Directors elected by the Lower House and in the four elected by the Senatethe vote will have to be repeated after 48 hoursthat is, this Thursday at noon.
The candidate best placed to end up assuming the leadership of the public entity is Jose Pablo Lopezwho was RTVE’s Content Director until he was fired amid the controversy over the signing of David Broncanopresenter of The Revolt.
In any case, there was no majority in this first vote. Only the parties from the investiture bloc have voted. In total, 177 votes in favor. This Tuesday, they were necessary, at least, two thirds of the Lower House. It will, therefore, be on Thursday when the vote is repeated and the election of the new president is sealed. So, as the law that governs the public entity dictates after the modifications that the Government made this October, in the second vote an absolute majority is sufficient, 176 seats.
The decree law with which the Executive reformed the Council and the presidency of RTVE has, fundamentally, two legs. On the one hand, increases the number of directors from 10 to 15. 11 of them are chosen by the Congress and four by the Senate. That process already culminated last week.
On the other hand, the modification change the necessary majorities to carry out the election of the councilors and the president. Now, one is enough absolute majority (176 votes or more) to be elected. In the PSOE they justify this change because, they explain, it is the optimal formula to avoid blockages. The opposition criticizes the Government and calls the movement a maneuver to build a tailored RTVE.
