Senna-Prost, an unparalleled duo
Star players, teammates, internal rivals and then all-round, even in front of journalists, finally even friends. I'm Ayrton Seine and Alain Prostthe two champions who characterized Formula 1 in the eighties and nineties, and who gave rise to one of the most iconic rivalries in memory.
The two famously were teammates at McLaren in the two-year period 1988-1989, sharing one World Cup each: first in Magic and then to Professorafter that contact from Suzuka which further detonated the pair.
If you ask a team principal what type of couple he would like to have on the team, he is very likely to lean towards a strong first driver and a reliable second driver. However, if you talk from the outside, it is easier to let yourself go, like when in football you put Maradona, Pelé, Di Stefano, Messi and Ronaldo in the top 11 of all time. Eddie Jordan, therefore, has no doubts: Senna-Prost is the best duo that ever existed.
Jordan's words
“I think the Prost-Senna partnership will probably be considered number one, because they were exceptionally talented“, these are his words in the podcast Formula for Success. “Prost won four world titles, of course, and Senna won a lot of titles too, and they were incredibly fast. And Michael Schumacher? He came back and told everyone that he was coming back to help Eddie Irvine win the championship. He didn't do it. He did everything he could because he didn't want Ferrari to win a championship with a driver other than him. This is what I believe and what Irvine believes. If you look at the way he handled the race and Suzuka, he did nothing to help Eddie. I think Michael was always a difficult teammate, because Massa, Barrichello and Irvine were all great domestiques and everyone knew what their limits were.“.
