the danish Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo) took an important step towards the final victory in the Tour de France by easily winning the alpine time trial on Tuesday, the sixteenth stage of the gala round, taking 1 minute and 38 seconds ahead of his rival, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE).
Waiting for the last alpine day, on Wednesday, with the dreaded Col de la Loze on the programme, Vingegaard is closer to his second successive Tour win, with a 1:48 lead over second overall Pogacar with five stages to go. carlos rodriguez (Ineos) lost third place to the benefit of Adam Yates (UAE). The Briton was seventh, 3 min 12 s behind Vingegaard, while the Andalusian finished twelfth, 3 min 36 s.
Yates overcame the 19-second deficit and is now five seconds ahead of Rodríguez, now fourth.
Vingegaard put on quite a display on this 22.4km stage in the Alps, between PAssy and Combloux.
“I have not yet won the Tour, there are very difficult days ahead and the Tour is not over. We will have to fight until Paris. I will do everything possible to keep this yellow jersey until Paris,” said the cyclist from Jumbo Visma.
And he added: “I’ve had a great day on the bike. Since morning I’ve felt good, from the first pedal strokes. I wanted to go full throttle at first, keep something on the flat, but I saw that I was giving a lot of watts until the measuring instrument has broken and I have decided to go all the way”.
Vingegaard pointed out that they did not have the time trial marked as the place to deliver a final blow to the Tour, but as an important day.
“It was not the intention to win everything today, it was a central day, but everything is part of a great plan and today we have been very good in executing it,” he commented.
