British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced Wednesday that Britain will send an additional 6,000 missiles to Ukraine, more than doubling the lethal defensive weapons that London has decided to supply to Kyiv since the Russian offensive began a month ago.
On the eve of the NATO and G7 summits scheduled in Brussels on Thursday, Johnson said that despite the “extraordinarily brave” resistance demonstrated by the Ukrainians, “we cannot and will not stand by and allow the Russians to turn Ukrainian cities into ashes.”
“The UK will work with its allies to increase Ukraine’s military and economic support and bolster its defenses as this battle turns upside down,” he added.
Britain has previously supplied Ukraine with 4,000 anti-tank missiles, including N-Lau and Javelin, in addition to the Startrek shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles.
This brings to more than 10,000 the number of missiles Kyiv has acquired or will receive from London since the Russian offensive began on February 24.
The British Prime Minister also announced that London would provide the Ukrainian army with 25 million pounds (30 million euros) in aid, in addition to more than 400 million pounds in economic and humanitarian aid that London had previously pledged to provide to Kiev.
The conservative prime minister warned that “a month into the crisis, the international community faces a choice: either we keep the flame of freedom burning in Ukraine, or we risk seeing it extinguished throughout Europe and the world.”
