Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition figure, has been sentenced to nine years in a ‘strict regime penal colony’. This due to an alleged case of fraud that his followers and supporters have described as “fabricated” by the Russian president’s regime, Vladimir Putin.
Alexey (also written Alexei or Aleksei) was arrested after returning to Russia in 2021, after surviving a poisoning for which he blamed the Kremlin (Russian government).
The prosecutors in the case found him guilty of stealing 4.7 million dollars, that is, 15 billion Colombian pesos, in donations given to his organizations such as the FBK anti-corruption foundation. It should be noted that the organizations are now banned by the Russian government.
This new sentence replaces the previous prison sentence and now Navalny will have to serve seven years in a maximum security prison, which is much stricter than Moscow’s Pokrov prison, where he has spent more than a year.
