The Association of Editors of Madrid has awarded the Antonio de Sancha 2025 award in its 29th edition to Joan Manuel Serrat «for being an example of personal and intellectual honesty, and in recognition of his work as part of the sentimental education of several generations of Spaniards and Americans ».

Always consistent in his commitment to democracy and human rights, in 1968 he refused to represent Spain in Eurovision since he was not allowed to sing in Catalan, and in 1975 he self -exiled in Mexico after publicly condemning the last five death sentences executed by The Franco dictatorship. Similarly, his confrontation with the military regimes of Chile, Uruguay and Argentina led him to a new exile and did not return to these countries until years later with the recovery of his democracies.
