Super Blue Moon Today, August 19, 2024: The Meaning, Why It’s Called That, When and How to See It, Time, What Time, Italy, Streaming, Where to See It
Today, August 19, 2024, it is possible to admire the Super Blue Moon, known as the Sturgeon Moon. But when and how to see it in Italy? At what time? We will tell you right away: today’s Super Moon will also be visible in our country, starting at 8:26 pm today. However, since it will reach perigee – the point of its orbit closest to the Earth – only at 7:05 am on Wednesday, in reality you will be able to enjoy its romantic charm also on Tuesday evening, when it will have started to wane. An appointment that will therefore keep us company for two nights in a row, today and tomorrow.
The term Supermoon is commonly used to indicate that special situation in which our satellite transits at least 90% of the maximum possible perigee just when it is visible in its entirety. Specifically, this time the minimum distance will be 361,970 kilometers: few but not very few, as all the remaining Supermoons of the year will get even closer. This proximity will make our natural satellite appear slightly larger and brighter than usual. Despite the suggestive name, the Moon will not take on any blue color: it is simply a popular denomination, which has no scientific basis. The term ‘blue’, therefore, has no relation to the color of the star.
“The Supermoon of August 19 will appear about 6% larger and a little brighter than average, but only an expert observer could, perhaps, realize this,” explains astrophysicist Gianluca Masi, scientific director of the Virtual Telescope Project. A variation therefore not particularly significant. It is the third full Moon of the four expected in the summer of 2024. The expression “once in a blue moon” in English in fact indicates a rare event, comparable to our “once in a blue moon”.
In 2024 there will be three more Supermoons, even more fascinating: one on Thursday, September 19 (perigee at 357,486 kilometers), one on Thursday, October 17 (perigee at 357,364 kilometers) and the last one on Friday, November 15 (perigee at 361,867). It will be possible to observe today’s Blue Supermoon, in addition to the naked eye, by connecting to the live streaming on YouTube: scheduled start at 9.30pm.
