We have long since surrendered to the presence of businessmen in football. There’s nothing to do. We are talking about a sport, to continue calling it that, which is already part of the billionaire circuit, a reason that obviously explains that the Spain Supercup is played in Saudi Arabia, a rare circumstance, quite rare, very rare, but that surprises no one. “What is art? Prostitution”, he asked and answered Baudelaire, who I bring up I don’t know why, I guess for nothing, but at the same time that’s why we’re all thinking.
Slowly at first, and very quickly later, these beings called leaders reached maximum influence, a fact compatible with not having a clue or too much love for football. I suppose that knowledge and love could get in the way and hinder their managerial work. Apparently, this detachment towards everything that happens on the pitch, although it may not seem like it, is great for doing business and for the pitch, so that if a footballer dares to say that it makes no sense to play the Super Cup your country in a distant country, where a monarch controls the legislative, executive and judicial power, you will be immediately interrupted by a manager saying “Excuse me? These are the numbers”.
We are dealing with individuals who do not have a predilection for the game, but for an opportunity. The market does not need feelings, or passions, or fans. In its own way, football is an object that has a certain beauty, and that generates a lot of income. If one day the clubs and their competitions collapse, or profits peak, the billionaires will think that it was just a business, and they will go and play with their money elsewhere. They appreciate the commercial value of football, without a doubt, but they ignore what it is to be moved by something that happens on a field, and that refers to affection. These are the only things that have survived since the sport was invented, and what is in danger since it became what we hatefully call “modern football”, and advertising, television and profiteers took over.
