The IT Wallet is the new digital solution that will allow Italian citizens to simply and securely store and use their digital documents, such as the electronic identity card, the health card, the driving license and the European disability card . This tool will be available from mid-2024, within the IO app, the platform that allows access to online services of the public administration and participating private individuals.
The objective of It Wallet is to facilitate the relationship between citizens and the public administration, speeding up and simplifying access to digital services. Furthermore, in the future it will be integrated with European digital identity systems, allowing citizens to use online services also in other European Union countries. In the meantime, it will certainly be essential to guarantee accessibility even to citizens less accustomed to technology and to keep the traditional channels of communication with the Public Administration functioning so as to make the process of digitalisation and modernization of the state machine easier.
It Wallet will work through the IO app and will require the use of Spid or Cie to access. The documents will be protected by code or fingerprint and can be blocked in the event of theft or loss of the phone. In addition to being more secure, It Wallet will certainly make it more convenient to show documents, without the need to carry physical documents with you.
The demo version of It Wallet will be released by June 30, 2024, followed by the final version by the end of the year. By 2025, It Wallet will become the only national digital identity, and by 2026, the European digital wallet will be created.
