The Nexplanon contraceptive implant is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, but like any medical device, it can have serious side effects
A woman from Nottinghamshire, England, experienced ashocking experience. Rebecca Hardy, 29, went to hospital for a check-up and noticed that a particular device was no longer present where it had been inserted. In short, something had gotten out of control in her body.
The woman, in fact, discovered thecontraceptive implant moved far beyond the most bizarre expectations. It was implanted in her arm and ended up in her lungs. After a series of tests, doctors found the implant in one of her pulmonary arteries.
Ms Hardy said doctors advised her against removing the implant, due to the risk of serious complications. “They told me there was a possibility that the implant would tear an artery during removal,” she told the Daily Mail. The woman wanted to think about having two children to think about, for this reason she decided “not to take risks”.
The plant Nexplanon it is inserted just under the skin. It is a particular hormonal contraceptive. The active ingredient, etonogestrel, works in two ways: it prevents the release of an egg cell from the ovary; causes certain changes in the cervix that make it difficult for sperm to penetrate the uterus. But from the arm the small bar must have traveled in a decidedly unexpected way.
Ms Hardy is not the only woman to have had a similar experience. In 2019, a 31-year-old woman in Portugal suffered a surgery to remove a contraceptive implant from her lungs. Again the device moved from the arm to the arteries and then to the lungs.
UK health authorities have published guidance on removal of these systems when moving to hazardous areas. Ms Hardy shared her story on TikTok to raise awareness of this risk for other women. The woman also criticized the doctors who inserted the implant, claiming they did not give her adequate information about the potential risks.
The Nexplanon contraceptive implant is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy, but like any medical device, it can have serious side effects. Certainly one could not expect to find it in the lungs. Women who are considering using this type of implant should talk to their doctor to weigh the risks and benefits
