President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Thursday rejected the Ukrainian government’s request for Mexico to detain Russian President Vladimir Putin if he decides to attend the inauguration of Morena member Claudia Sheinbaum.
“We cannot do that, it is not our responsibility, we are against wars, we are in favour of peace and what we have proposed in the case of the war between Russia and Ukraine is agreements, that there be mediation,” he said.
“I even proposed at the time that the Indian minister, Modi, be called together with Pope Francis and the Secretary General of the United Nations to establish communication, stop the war and prevent the people from continuing to suffer, both in Ukraine and in Russia.”
Yesterday, the Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico expressed its hope that the Mexican authorities will capture the Russian President if he decides to set foot on Mexican soil.
In a statement, the diplomatic mission said that there is an arrest warrant against the Russian President for the kidnapping and forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia, issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), whose jurisdiction Mexico recognizes.
“We trust that the Mexican government will comply with the international arrest warrant by handing the aforementioned man over to the United Nations judicial body in The Hague,” he said.
This morning, in a press conference, López Obrador justified the invitation addressed to Putin, after reiterating that Mexico had invited the leaders and heads of state of all the countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations.
In this context, he recalled that Mexico broke off relations with Ecuador, following the armed incursion of the diplomatic headquarters by the Government of Daniel Noboa, and that tensions with Peru prevail, following the overthrow and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo.
“The President-elect has already explained that Mexico has relations with almost all countries in the world. Right now there are no relations with Ecuador, because they invaded our embassy, and there are no good relations with Peru either. But in general, relations with all governments are very good,” he said.
“What do you do? You invite everyone and then the governments decide whether they want to attend or not. That’s right. That has to do with Mexico’s diplomatic policy.”
After recalling the criticism of the participation of elements of the Russian Army in the 2023 independence parade, the President exemplified the diplomatic relations that Mexico maintains by reporting on the sending of doctors from the Navy to Nicaragua, whose government has been questioned by the international community.
“We have relations with all countries. You have just been in Nicaragua or you are going to go, elements, doctors,” commented the head of Semar, Rafael Ojeda.
