He Renault 5 E-Tech It is the big launch of the rhombus brand, within the electric car segment, for the end of the year. A car that, in 2025, will be accompanied by the new Renault 4, another legendary model of the brand that will also be reborn as an electric car.
Renault already markets the Renault 5 E-Tech in its 150 HP version and 52 kWh battery, which offers a range of 412 km. And a little later the 122 HP version with a 40 kW battery will hit the market, which is expected to have 300 km of autonomy.
By 2025, the most affordable version of this urban car will go on sale: the one with 95 HP and a 40 kWh battery, which should equal 300 km of autonomy.
Renault’s plans to increase the autonomy of the Renault 5 and the next Renault 4
But, sooner rather than later, Renault will introduce significant changes in both the capacity and type of batteries to increase the autonomy of the Renault 5 and, also, that of the Renault 4, the SUV based on the previous one.
This fact, reported by the French media L’ArgusThis was confirmed by Luca de Meo himself, the CEO of the Renault Group, during the last Paris Motor Show.
And the Italian executive, speaking with the aforementioned French media, pointed out that the “general performance [del Renault 5] It is so attractive as it makes it the main vehicle for a small family. But the most important thing is that he then added that ““It will be even more true when the R4 has 500 km of autonomy.”.
The future batteries of the Renault 5 and Renault 4, LFP type and in greater numbers
From this statement, L’Argus has investigated and explains that, by 2026, Renault expects to vary substantially both the composition and configuration of their batteries.
So, These will become LFP type -lithium ferrophosphate-, which although they are more economical than current lithium-ion ones, also offer less energy density. Therefore, at the same size, they would offer less capacity.
To avoid this, Renault will bet on technology cell to packwhich will integrate the battery cells directly into its contour, eliminating their placement in the hitherto necessary modules and gaining space that, to achieve maximum capacity, will be used to incorporate more energy cells.
Along with this change in technology, renault You will also change providers. In this way, the 40 kWh battery cells, which until now are manufactured by AESC in Douai (France), will be replaced by those of the LFP type produced by LG Chem in Poland.
With them, and as already explained, a cheaper battery will be achieved but, above all, one that the autonomy of the Renault 5 and Renault 4 with said battery -95 and 120 HP versions-increase from the current 300 km approved to around 400 km.
The most powerful Renault 5, with 500 km
For its part, the most powerful version of the French urban car, the one with 150 HP and equipped with a 52 kWh battery – a mechanical set that should also reach the Renault 4 – will increase its autonomy over the next few years. 412 kilometers that it currently approves up to around 500 kilometers.
These are, at least, the plans of Ampere and Renault, although these companies expect a technological evolution of the current lithium-ion batteries, such as this 52 kWh one.
Besides, L’Argus points out that this improvement will also be carried over to the Renault 5’s sports twin, the Alpine A290which he points out could reach the market -probably in 2026- a even more powerful version, around 245 HP, which is added to the already planned 180 and 220 HP.
