This Tuesday, the Israeli Army launched a new wave of “large scale attacks” against alleged objectives of the Shiite party-militia Hezbollah in the capital of Lebanon, after a barrage of bombings early in the day against the city and in the midst of apparent progress towards a possible ceasefire agreement.
“The Israeli Armed Forces (IDF) are attacking Hezbollah terrorist targets on a large scale in the Beirut area,” the Air Force said in a brief message on its account on the social network X, minutes after the publication of new evacuation orders for several neighborhoods located in the south of the capital.
The Israeli Ministry of Defense has indicated in a brief statement that the head of the portfolio, Israel Katz, has approved “the continuation of offensive operations of the IDF on the northern front”, in a meeting with several senior officials of the Army and Israel’s security and intelligence agencies.
However, official sources cited by the newspaper The Times of Israel have indicated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called a meeting of the security cabinet for 4:00 p.m. (local time) to address the ceasefire proposal presented by the United States, which could be approved by the parties this Tuesday.
During the last few days, various official sources reported by local media have pointed to progress in talks for a ceasefire agreement within the framework of mediation efforts by the United States, although for now there is no official confirmation about the possibility that this agreement will be signed.
Lebanon has expressed its desire to implement resolution 1701 of the United Nations Security Council, approved in 2006 after the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah and that contemplates the withdrawal of forces of the party-militia north of the Litani River, an area in which the Lebanese Army should later deploy together with the UN Interim Force for Lebanon (Finul).
On October 1, Israel unleashed a new invasion of Lebanon after several weeks of intense bombings and attacks against the country, including the coordinated explosion of thousands of communication devices used by the Lebanese group. Lebanon has reported more than 3,700 deaths since the outbreak of hostilities on October 8, 2023.
The resurgence of hostilities is part of the clashes that began more than a year ago, after Hezbollah to attack Israeli territory after the attacks carried out on October 7, 2023 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian groups, which led Israel to unleash a bloody offensive against the Gaza Strip, where they have already died more than 44,200 people.
