Israel bombing again this Friday Gaza Stripa besieged Palestinian territory whose population faces “imminent famine,” according to the World Food Program, after almost six months of war with the Islamist movement Hamas.
He Gaza Ministry of Healthruled by Hamas, indicated on Friday morning that the fighting and bombings, especially in Rafah, had caused “dozens of deaths.”
In that city in the south of the Stripeconsidered by Israel to be the last bastion of Hamas1.5 million people are crowded together, the majority displaced by violence in other parts of the territory.
The conflict, which began after the attack by the Islamist movement on Israeli soil on October 7, has left the narrow territory in ruins and its 2.4 million inhabitants on the brink of famine, according to the UN.
“There is no other place in the world where there are such a significant number of people facing imminent famine,” Matthew Hollingworth, head of the World Food Program (WFP) for the Palestinian Territories.
“Without delay”
The International Court of Justice (ICJ), The highest court of the UN, based in The Hague, on Thursday ordered Israel to guarantee “without delay” the unhindered delivery of “basic services and urgent humanitarian aid” to Gaza.
After a lawsuit from South Africathe ICJ in January demanded that Israel prevent any act of “genocide” in Gaza and allow the entry of humanitarian aid. Israel He called the accusations “scandalous.”
For its part, Hamas welcomed the ruling of the ICJ and asked that it be put into practice “immediately.”
The war has caused a humanitarian catastrophe in the small territory and land aid only comes in in dribs and drabs. Several countries are dropping food by parachute, especially in the north of the Strip, where the situation is desperate.
The war was sparked by a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which left at least 1,160 dead, mainly civilians, according to a count by the AFP based on Israeli data.
According to Israel, some 250 people were kidnapped and 130 of them remain hostages in Gaza, 34 of whom have died.
In retaliation, Israel vowed to “annihilate” Hamas and launched a vast operation that left 32,623 dead, mostly women and minors, according to Hamas' Health Ministry.
Hezbollah leader killed
Since then, the fighting has been incessant.
The Israeli army, which accuses Hamas fighters of hiding in hospitals, said Friday that its operations at the Al Shifa medical complex in Gaza City –in the north of the territory– they continue. There, he said he had “eliminated about 200 terrorists” since March 18.
Interventions are also being carried out in the center of the Strip and in Khan Yunis, in the south, in the Al Amal and Qarara sectors.
In Khan Yunis, several injured people were taken by ambulance to the European hospital overnight, according to AFP images. Some of the victims, including minors, were treated on the ground.
The war also caused an uptick in violence on the Israel-Lebanon border.
The Israeli army announced this Friday that it killed Ali Abdel Hassan Naim, head of the missile unit of the pro-Iran Hezbollah movement, an ally of Hamas, in a bombing in southern Lebanon.
And in Syria, an Israeli bombing in the Aleppo region in the north of the country killed 36 soldiers and six Hezbollah fighters.
“Nothing has changed”
But much of the attention is focused on the city of Rafah, where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is determined to launch a ground offensive, despite international pressure not to do so.
“We have the northern Gaza Strip and Khan Younis. We have cut it in two [el territorio] and we are preparing to enter Rafah,” Netanyahu said on Thursday.
USA, Israel's main ally, fears the death toll that this operation could leave and requested that the Jewish State send a delegation to Washington to talk about this project.
Qatar, which acts as a mediator with Egypt and the United Statesassured this week that indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas continue, with the aim of achieving a truce and an exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners.
The UN adopted a resolution on Monday demanding an “immediate ceasefire”, which was made possible by the abstention of USA, but “nothing has changed” on the ground since then, lamented the international president of Doctors Without Borders, Christos Christou.
