The Government of Israel stated this Thursday that South Africa's urgent request to the UN International Court of Justice (ICJ) to examine its decision to expand its military operations in the southern Gaza Strip is “very peculiar and inappropriate” and seeks to “misuse” the procedure of provisional measures of this body.

“Israel regrets that South Africa seeks once again to improperly use the Court's provisional measures procedure on this occasion with a very peculiar and inappropriate request,” Israel said in its observations on the request sent this Monday by the South African Government, which asked to examine the decision to prevent “new violations” of the rights of the Palestinian people.

Israel considers the entire case itself initiated at the end of December by South Africa to be “totally unfounded in fact and law, morally repugnant and represents an abuse” both the Genocide Convention and this UN Court.
