The director of the action RPG Stellar Blade stated that it is a “great honor” for the game to be called the “Korean Nier“, because he is a big fan of Yoko Taro, aka the author of Nier.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, director Hyung-Tae Kim shed light on the influences and sources of inspiration for Stellar Blade, particularly the Nier series. He declared appreciate the comparisoneven if it doesn't fit perfectly with Stellar Blade's gameplay.
“Nier was very important as a source of inspiration for the development of our games,” he says. “It's a wonderful title that we took inspiration from and regarding the director, Yoko Taro, I'm also a big fan of her script. I'm a big fan of Yoko Taro.”
“If you can play Stellar Blade, you'll see that the gameplay isn't all that similar. They are quite different,” adds the developer.
“We pay homage to the games we played, but when you actually play you notice some differences,” Kim continues. “But being called the Korean Nier and being influenced by a title like that is a great honor“.
Stellar Blade and the visual style
Kim also talked about the visual style of Stellar Bladewhich in some ways echoes that of Black Desert Online: “Since we are a Korean developer, we cannot deny that we have been influenced by Korean style. But at the same time, we always try to find our own style, halfway between realism and a more warped style of characters. And in the process, we always try to find our own unique charm.”
The developer says the team draws on media such as K-pop, Korean films and K-dramas in pursuit of “our attractive character design”, which contributes to Stellar Blade's “slightly Korean charm”. But more than anything, Kim says he's always applied his own unique aesthetic, which “has progressed and evolved, and that's been implemented in Stellar Blade.”
