Film critics would never have imagined that the New York comedian from Saturday Night Live named Adam Sandler he was going to become a comedic antihero. If they had known, they would have put even more effort to prevent him from passing as an actor, star and now brand of bad taste.
With the films “Billy Madison”, “Happy Gilmore” and “Little Nicky”, he made a statement of intent to which he always remained faithful, without being self-conscious about the five Razzie wins out of 16 nominations. Rarely are we going to find a career as polarized as his: hated by critics and loved by the audience.
In almost all his productions we saw that Peterpanesque clown, armed with coarse jokes and elbowed with his dear comrades. While other actors saw filming as a day at work, for him it was a vacation disguised as a bad romantic comedy or a goofy action movie.
However, the story was different on those rare occasions when he silenced his detractors. We were not only able to appreciate his other gifts, but even opportunities to see him hoisting an Oscar award. Next, we share five of his films in which we don’t laugh at him, but with him.
“Intoxicated with love”
The story introduces us to Barry Egan, a shy and lonely man who enters into an existential crisis. When romance unexpectedly comes to life, he finds himself threatened by an extortionist and a series of unpredictable events.
“Rough diamonds”
Howard Ratner owns a jewelry store in New York City’s diamond district that sells exclusively to the rich and famous. One day there is a major robbery that forces him to face an economic debt that he is not prepared to pay.
“The Meyerowitz stories”
In this opportunity, Sandler plays one of the sons of a prominent but unfriendly New York artist. The brothers get together to celebrate their father and his work.
“Claw”
A basketball scout discovers a hugely talented player with a rocky past. Without his team’s approval, he decides to take the phenom with him, giving them both one last chance to prove themselves worthy of the NBA.
“Somewhere in memory”
Charlie Fineman is a dentist from Manhattan who lost his family on 9/11 and also his will to live. One fine day, he meets an old classmate from college whose friendship will help him overcome the tragedy.
