‘Irati’, a story about Christianity and paganism in the eighth century, nominated for five awards in the last edition of the Goyas, was presented in Sombra by its own artist, Paul Urkijo, accompanied by the costume designer Nerea Torrijos. It is inspired by the Irati jungle, in the heart of Navarra, a place of mythological legends and mystery; but in addition to fantasy, it also vindicates culture and origin with the aim of preserving the memory of the roots of a society and strengthening folklore and love for the land.
The Regional Film Library and the Mediterranean Foundation have hosted these days the projection of 21 films and 25 short films in competition, coming from very different parts of the world. An appointment that has taken the followers of this festival to the four cardinal points of fantasy: from science fiction to terror, through animation and surrealism.
The filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia, who in an interview with Natalia Benito in LA VERDAD assured that “it is unfortunate that only dead or foreign artists are valued”, has been, precisely, one of the most applauded winners during his time at the Shadow 2023.
