The Hong Kong-based newspaper, Asia Times, said that the military cooperation between Iran and Myanmar may include Iranian sensitive arms sales.
This comes amid mounting international calls to impose an arms embargo on the ruling military council in this Asian country.
Diplomatic sources in Southeast Asia, who declined to be named, said that the Iranian delegation that landed in Myanmar on January 13 may be the second and third to visit this country since the army seized power on February 1, 2021.
According to Flightradar24 data, the Iranian plane belonged to the air cargo company “Qeshm Fars”, and took off from Mashhad, the second largest city in Iran.
The website stated that the plane later returned to Iran.
“This is the second time that a flight has been observed from Iran,” said Myanmar’s shadow foreign minister, Zin Marie Aung, adding that it was likely to be related to military technology.
She considered the matter worrisome, not because of the atrocities being committed against the people of Myanmar, but from a regional and international perspective.
The Iranian company has been subject to US sanctions for years, claiming that it transferred weapons from the Revolutionary Guards to pro-Iranian militias outside its borders.
It was not previously known about the existence of a military relationship between Iran and Myanmar, which often depends for its armament on China, Russia and India.
Moreover, in 2017, the Iranian government called on Muslim countries to form a military force to stop the wave of persecution against the Rohingya Muslim minority.
