Tehran had so far denied that its weapons had been used in the invasion of Ukraine.
Iran has acknowledged today for the first time having delivered drones to Russia before the invasion of Ukraine at the end of February, confirming kyiv’s accusations against Moscow about the use of weapons of that origin for attacks against civilians and infrastructure. “We provided a limited number months before the war,” Foreign Minister Hosein Amir Abdolahian announced.
In recent weeks, kyiv and its Western allies had accused Russia of using Tehran-made drones to carry out attacks in Ukraine. The Ayatollahs’ regime repeatedly denied that these weapons were produced in Iran. In any case, the head of the Persian diplomacy declared himself willing to examine any evidence that they had been used in the conflict.
From the Government of Volodímir Zelenski it is affirmed that so far some 400 Iranian drones have been used against the civilian population and that Moscow has ordered some 2,000. “Tehran must bear in mind that the consequences of complicity in Russia’s crimes against Ukraine will far outweigh the benefits,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikolenko said on Facebook, reacting to the Iranian statements.
Tehran’s admission of these drone deliveries demonstrates a little more the rapprochement between Russia and Iran that has begun in recent months, in the face of a Ukraine widely supported by the United States and the European Union (EU).
