The postponed release date of the iPad Pro M4 OLED has generated uncertainty in the market, but it appears that Apple and the South Korean display manufacturers have not changed their minds about initial shipping volumes. According to market research firm Omdia, cited by the Korean website TheElec, global shipments of OLED tablets in 2024 could reach 12.1 million units, of which 8.12 million (about 61.7%) would be Hybrid OLED panels. Given that this type of panel should be used for the first time by the iPad Pro OLED (even if Apple calls them Tandem OLED), it is easy to imagine that a significant part of Omdia’s predictions concerns the Apple device.
Some analytics firms estimate 2024 iPad Pro OLED shipments of between 4.5 and 5 million units, but South Korean industry sources suggest that companies like Apple, LG Display (LGD) and Samsung Display (SDC) are maintaining their targets original shipping charges for the finished iPad Pro products and the panels themselves. We are talking about 5 million units for LGD and over 4 million for SDC. Apple’s new OLED iPad Pro will be available in two sizes, 11 and 13 inches. LG will supply panels for both models, while Samsung will only deal with the 11 inches, strengthening its production lines to keep up with demand.
It is hypothesized that the price of $999 (€1,219 in Italy) is among the main reasons for this success. Before the presentation, in fact, analysts had indicated list prices higher than those actually chosen by Apple: even Ross Young, founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, expected the 11 and 13 inch OLED iPad Pro models inches cost up to 50% more than their direct predecessors.
Recently, meanwhile, iFixit also got its hands on the new iPad, giving a positive evaluation regarding the repairability of the battery, but highlighting notable compromises due to the need to further reduce the size of the device compared to previous models.
