OceanGate apparently ignored safety concerns with its Titanic submersible. According to media reports, interns are said to have designed the “Titan” electrical system.
St. John’s – Many questions remain unanswered after the catastrophe in the depths of the Atlantic. OceanGate’s Titan submersible has imploded on its way to the Titanic wreck. Five people were on board, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush. The boss is said to have employed interns to design electrical systems for the “Titan” submersible. The magazine reports The New Yorker.

OceanGate chief hired interns for Titan submersible
It was not the first dive of the “Titan” submersible. OceanGate will start its Titanic expeditions in 2021. The 6.70 meter long diving capsule has already transported some Titanic tourists to the depths. They report an “improvised” impression of a gaming controller to control. There are said to have been problems with the mini submarine on other expeditions, as videos show.
A former OceanGate employee warned of safety issues shortly before the disaster and was fired. According to submarine pilot Philippe Epelbaum, billionaire Stockton Rush had before just lucky.
The OceanGate CEO apparently not only relied on unconventional material, such as carbon fiber for the pressure hull, but also on interns. As the US magazine reports, interns from Washington State University (WSU) are said to have been employed to work on the “Titan”.
“The entire electrical system – that was our design, we implemented it and it works”
“The entire electrical system — that was our design, we made it, and it works,” former intern Mark Walsh told the in February 2018 Washington State University college newspaper. “We are about to make history and all of our systems will go down on the Titanic. It’s a great feeling!” said the recent college grad. Accordingly, Walsh was employed permanently at OceanGate after completing his studies in electrical engineering. According to the college newspaper, citing its own statements, it is responsible for everything from monitors, keyboards and tablets to Wi-Fi and sonar.
What part of the electrical system the “Titan” Walsh and other interns were involved with wanted Business Insider find out. However, OceanGate has yet to comment.
Titanic dive disaster – tragedy is not meant to happen again
There is apparently another puzzle behind the terrible tragedy of June 18, 2023. Little by little, details about the mini-submarine used for Titanic expeditions are coming to light. OceanGate apparently adorned itself with false feathers.
The company advertised according to the The New Yorker with partnerships with NASA, Boeing and Washington State University. These claims were later denied by Boeing and Washington State University, saying they did not work on the Titan submersible. Loud Business Insider Walsh left OceanGate in 2019, citing information from a network profile. In addition, the university admitted in a report in the local daily newspaper The Everett Herald on June 22 that some graduates had worked at OceanGate and that one graduate would also work there.
The Titanic submersible imploded on June 18, 2023. Debris from the Titan has been recovered. The evidence would “provide important insights into the cause of this tragedy,” said the head of the US investigation, Jason Neubauer on June 29, 2023. However, there is still much to be done “to understand the factors that led to this catastrophic loss the Titan” and should have helped “so that a tragedy like this does not happen again”. Previously, experts doubted the salvage of the debris and human remains. (ml)
