The New York Times defined the moment as “the worst natural disaster in the history of Brazil”. The newspaper also recalled the drama experienced by Petropolitans a decade ago: “For many residents of Petrópolis, the disaster was a painful memory of 2011, when similar landslides killed more than 900 people in the region”.
The Argentine Clarín and the British network BBC highlighted the speech of the governor of Rio, Cláudio Castro, comparing the situation to a scenario of war.
On its website, Le Monde brought the State of Calamity decree in the region after the tragedy and recalled the recent floods in Bahia and Minas Gerais. “Brazil was hit in this rainy season by particularly severe rains – which also affected Bahia and Minas Gerais – which experts link to global warming,” he said.
The British newspaper The Guardian, in turn, drew attention to the devastating floods and to the speech of the mayor of Petrópolis, Rubens Bomtempo, that the death toll is still on the rise.
