A week after the activation of the first points to process temporary protection, 5,830 refugees from the war in Ukraine have obtained their residence and work permits, according to data announced by the Interior this Friday. Of the total authorizations, 2,416 have been processed in the reception centers of Madrid and Alicante, while the majority of resolutions, 3,414, have been managed in the police stations authorized by the Police in the rest of the communities.
“Our job is to guarantee the rights of people and give them the temporary protection permits that come with a residence permit, work permit and the possibility of having all social services, education and health, as soon as possible,” he explained. Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska.
The autonomous communities where the most permits have been granted are Madrid (1,603) and Valencia (908), regions that have reception centers for Ukrainians and higher concentrations of Ukrainian residents before the war. They are followed by Andalusia, with 827 approved authorizations; and Catalonia, with 474 applications answered favourably.
Grande-Marlaska, and the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, José Luis Escrivá, signed on March 9 the order that develops the urgent procedure for the recognition of temporary protection. This order was decreed in compliance with the agreement reached by the Council of Ministers of the Interior of the European Union, which agreed for the first time in history to apply the Temporary Protection Directive.
