Instagram is hiding posts that mention abortion, and requiring, in some cases, confirmation from users that they are adults before allowing viewing.
On Tuesday, posts from several Instagram accounts run by abortion rights groups were hidden behind a “sensitive content” warning. A text, entitled “Abortion in America, how to help”, published on a page with more than 25 thousand followers, received a warning from Instagram, about “graphic or violent content”.

The post encouraged the page’s followers to donate money to abortion organizations and protest against the United States Supreme Court’s decision to revoke the constitutional right to abortion, taken on Friday.
Instagram said it was fixing the problem, which it described as a programming error. A spokesperson for Meta Platforms Inc., the owner of Instagram, said in an email that the company does not impose age restrictions on content about abortion. The company admitted in a Twitter post that “people around the world” were seeing “‘sensitivity warnings’ in different content when they shouldn’t.”
News agencies also reported that both Instagram and Facebook, a social network also owned by Meta, were hiding posts that offered to send abortion pills to states that restrict their use. Social media said they were deleting these posts for violating policies against the sale or distribution of certain products, including pharmaceuticals, drugs and firearms.
